Wanderer above the Sea of Fog
From $340
By room
The walls you pass twenty times a day and never sit in front of. Vertical subjects, a sequence, and light that changes as you move.
A hallway is the only room where you never stand still, so it wants paintings that resolve at a glance and reward a glance: strong silhouettes, vertical compositions, figures moving through space. It is also the natural home for the paintings that are too intimate or too strange for a living room — The Lady of Shalott, Ophelia, Fallen Angel.
Stairwells are the best wall in the house and the worst to measure. The eye climbs with the body, so a sequence of pieces climbing the stair at 8–10 inch vertical steps, centred on the diagonal, works; one giant canvas centred in the middle of the well usually looks lost from both floors.
Hallways are also the darkest rooms, lit by whatever borrows in. Either choose paintings with internal light (night scenes, dusk, candle-lit interiors) or add a picture light — a £40 battery picture light does more for a hallway than repainting it.
Vertical canvases — 16 × 24, 20 × 30, 24 × 36 in portrait — are the default here. A horizontal painting in a narrow hall reads as a blocker.
For the stair diagonal: measure the string line, divide by the number of pieces, keep the centre of every frame on that line.
The full method — measuring, hanging height, sightlines — is in the wall-size guide. Every painting on this page can be made to the size your wall actually needs; the price on each card is the published starting price for the smallest canvas.
Questions
A half-bathroom without a shower, yes. A full bathroom's humidity cycles are hard on canvas and frame finishes; if you must, choose unframed and expect to re-varnish in a few years.
Space them so each has its own wall segment — about one per three metres of run in a domestic hallway. Past that it reads as storage, not collection.
A photograph of the wall with a tape measure in it is enough. We will show any painting on this page at true scale in your room, free, before you decide.
