Paintings for the office and study

On camera all day, behind you in every call. Something structured, nothing distracting — and a horizon helps.

An office painting has two audiences: you, at a desk, eight hours a day; and the camera, in every video call. The two wants are opposite — the eye wants rest, the camera wants contrast. The paintings that do both have structure: Kandinsky's geometric compositions, Vermeer's ordered rooms, Turner's regulated chaos of steam and speed.

The second rule is a horizon. Studies keep finding that people work measurably better with a view, even a painted one, and the effect is strongest with distance in it — a road, a sea, a fog bank. Wanderer above the Sea of Fog behind a desk is a cliché for a reason.

The third is honesty about what the room is. A home office is not a gallery; the painting should be legible in a webcam's compression, which means clear value structure and no whisper-fine detail as the main event.

Getting the size right

Seen from the desk and from the webcam: centre at 55–60 inches, width 24–36 inches. Larger is fine on a big wall but the camera only ever frames the middle third.

Behind the chair in frame: avoid portraits (you will be photobombed by a stranger) and avoid text-heavy compositions — compression makes them crawl.

The full method — measuring, hanging height, sightlines — is in the wall-size guide. Every painting on this page can be made to the size your wall actually needs; the price on each card is the published starting price for the smallest canvas.

Questions

Questions about this room

Medium contrast and a clear horizon. Test it: take a screenshot of yourself in front of the candidate painting's image. If the painting reads as 'a picture' rather than 'a blur', it will work.

Either, with different jobs: the geometric Kandinskys order a room; the landscapes rest the eye. The failure case is soft-focus figurative work, which reads as noise on camera.

Send us the wall instead of guessing

A photograph of the wall with a tape measure in it is enough. We will show any painting on this page at true scale in your room, free, before you decide.
