Interiors and quiet rooms

Vermeer's milkmaid, Van Gogh's bedroom, a bar at closing time — paintings about being indoors.

Interiors are the most underrated category on this site and the one that sells slowest, which is a pity, because a painting of a room does something no other subject does: it makes your own room feel inhabited.

Vermeer is the reason the category exists. He painted light coming through a window with such accuracy that the wall in your house seems to change when one of his rooms is on it. Van Gogh's Bedroom does the opposite — flat colour, no shadows, a room as a memory of a room — and it is the friendliest painting in the collection.

These are hang-anywhere pictures: kitchens, studies, the wall at the top of the stairs. They are small in the original and they work small on a wall.

How to size a painting in this collection

Interiors were painted small and belong small. The Milkmaid is about 18 × 16 inches in the original; at 20 × 24 it is already generous, and beyond that the intimacy goes.

Kitchens and studies are where they earn their keep. Hang at eye level from where you stand to work, not from where you sit to eat.

Where to go next

Every painting in this collection is made to order and can be produced in a size that is not listed. Prices on each page are the published starting price for the smallest canvas; larger sizes step up on the same ladder, so there is no quote to wait for.

Questions

Questions about this collection

No — it is the most common placement we ship. The palette is quiet and the subject is domestic. Choose unframed and have it stretched locally, or an oak floater frame, and avoid ornate gold in a kitchen.

Yes, if they share a light source. Vermeer and Van Gogh do not sit well side by side because the light in one is observed and in the other is invented. Two Vermeers, or two quiet interiors, read as a pair.

Sizes below 16 × 20 inches are possible but the detail gets tight. If you want a small piece, a single-figure crop — the milkmaid's hands, a corner of the bedroom — works better than shrinking the whole composition.
