Gifts by occasion

Gift paintings, by occasion

Pick the occasion and we will tell you which canvas size, which photograph and which deadline actually work — with prices published, not quoted.

A gift painting fails for two reasons, and neither is the painting. It arrives after the occasion, or it arrives in a size the recipient has nowhere to hang. Both are decided at the moment of ordering, which is why each page here starts with a date and a wall rather than with a style.

The prices are published, the same ladder on every page, because a gift that needs three emails to price is not a gift yet — it is a negotiation. What changes between occasions is the deadline arithmetic and the etiquette: who pays, who chooses the photograph, and who is allowed to see the painting before the day.

Questions

Before you choose

Six weeks before the date is comfortable and seven is safe: three to five weeks of painting, then three to five business days in transit. Rush delivery brings a single-subject portrait to three weeks including painting for $90.

Yes, and it is common for surprise gifts. It travels in a plain rigid tube with no studio branding on the outside, and the certificate is inside the tube rather than in a separate envelope that gives the game away.

That is a real risk with any gift, and the mitigation is the mock-up: the person paying approves the composition, crop and background before anything is painted. If the recipient would have chosen differently, at least the commissioner chose.
