The certificate
Every painting — commissioned or original — arrives with a numbered certificate of authenticity listing the title, finished dimensions, medium, the year it was painted, and the artist's signature.
For an original work this document is part of what you are buying. It is what distinguishes a painting from a picture, and it is what a framer, an insurer or a future owner will ask for. Keep it somewhere safe, and keep it with the piece if it ever changes hands.
