Rule one — two-thirds

Canvas width ≈ two-thirds of the furniture width. Over a 1.6 m sofa: about 105 cm, i.e. 30 × 40 in. Under half the width, the wall wins.

Rule two — 145 cm

Centre of the canvas at 145 cm (57 in) from the floor. Over furniture, 15–25 cm gap above the sofa back or headboard. High ceilings do not change the number.
