Dance and music

Degas in the rehearsal room, Renoir at the Sunday dance, Lautrec at the Moulin Rouge — painting as the record of a night out.

The Impressionists were the first painters to treat ordinary leisure as a subject worth a large canvas, and dance is where that idea is easiest to see: a rehearsal room, a Sunday afternoon under the trees, a can-can in artificial light. Nothing happens in these paintings and everything happens — the movement is in the bodies and the light.

They also solve a decorating problem. Dance pictures are full of figures but not portraits, so they fill a wall with people without staring back at you, which makes them unusually easy to live with in a dining room or a landing.

Degas is the one to look at closely when the painting arrives. He worked in pastel over monotype and left half the canvas bare on purpose; a reproduction that fills in every gap is a worse painting than one that leaves the floor unresolved.

How to size a painting in this collection

These compositions are multi-figure, so they need width to keep the figures legible. Below 24 inches the dancers become silhouettes.

A dining room is the natural home: the subject is social, the scale suits a wall seen across a table, and the palette — warm floors, cool skirts — flatters candlelight.

Where to go next

Every painting in this collection is made to order and can be produced in a size that is not listed. Prices on each page are the published starting price for the smallest canvas; larger sizes step up on the same ladder, so there is no quote to wait for.

Questions

Questions about this collection

Within limits. Multi-figure compositions can lose a figure or a strip of floor without damage, but squeezing the whole thing into a square will distort the figures. Send the wall dimensions and we will tell you which crop is safe.

Yes, a matte varnish after the paint has cured. It protects the surface from dust and from the oils on skin, which matters if the painting hangs where people brush past it.

Not if it is small. The failure mode is a large busy canvas in a small room. At 16 × 20 these read as a window into a party rather than as wallpaper.

Wall measured, painting chosen?

Send the wall dimensions and the piece you have in mind. We will confirm the size that keeps the composition intact and the date we can actually keep.
