A portrait is the only kind of painting that looks back. That is why it works in a hallway, where you pass it twenty times a day, and why it fails in a room where you sit facing it for an hour — the gaze becomes a demand.
Almost everything in this collection is a study of light on skin: Vermeer's cool north window, Sargent's theatrical key light, Klimt's gold flattening the body into pattern. Reproducing them well is mostly a matter of not over-painting. The temptation is to make the eyes sharper and the lips redder than the original; the artists who paint for us are briefed to copy, not to improve.
The prices are the standard ladder — the same canvas, the same paint, whether the face is Mona Lisa's or your daughter's. If what you actually want is your own family painted in this register, that is a commission rather than a reproduction, and the price table for it is here.
Portrait heads were painted for intimate rooms and they lose presence when blown up past roughly life size. Girl with a Pearl Earring at 30 × 40 inches is already larger than the original and starts to feel like a poster; at 16 × 20 it is a jewel.
Full-length compositions — Madame X, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I — are the opposite: they need height. Put them where the bottom of the frame falls below eye level, so the figure stands rather than floats.
Every painting in this collection is made to order and can be produced in a size that is not listed. Prices on each page are the published starting price for the smallest canvas; larger sizes step up on the same ladder, so there is no quote to wait for.
Questions
For these paintings, yes. Every work in this collection is in the public domain — the artist died more than seventy years ago and the copyright has expired — so a hand-painted copy is lawful to make, own, insure and resell. What is not lawful is selling it as the original, which is why every piece ships with a certificate stating exactly what it is.
The Mona Lisa does, and a good reproduction keeps that effect, because it comes from the painting rather than from the viewing angle. If you find it unsettling above a sofa, hang her in a hallway instead — that is where most of our clients put her.
We stock six frame styles; if none matches, ship us the painting and any framer can re-frame it, or order unframed and let your framer choose. The canvas is a standard stretcher, not a proprietary size.
Send the wall dimensions and the piece you have in mind. We will confirm the size that keeps the composition intact and the date we can actually keep.
